EU continues joint gas purchase

The EU Commission has announced that reliable international suppliers are invited to submit bids under the second EU joint natural gas procurement tender.

In the statement, it was stated that the tender covers the period from August 2023 to March 2025 and includes the delivery of 15.9 billion cubic meters of natural gas requested by 49 companies.

Pointing out that the new tender process will continue until July 10, the statement stated that approximately half of the total demand in the tender is for the purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

In the statement, it was reminded that the first joint gas purchase tender of the EU resulted in a gas supply agreement of 11.6 billion cubic meters.

Prior to the Russia-Ukraine War, the EU consumed around 400 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year.

Russia was the EU’s largest supplier of natural gas. With the war, the energy crisis began as natural gas shipments from Russia to Europe fell drastically.

The EU has been trying to reduce its dependence on Russia for natural gas and to diversify its suppliers.
